We will begin therapy by attempting to understand your struggles in the context of your friends, partner, family, job, and culture. I draw on various theories, as well as scientific research, to pinpoint an effective treatment. Establishing a healthy and trusting therapy relationship is one of the most important aspects of psychotherapy. The general course of therapy is:
If you are new to therapy, we may focus on symptom relief early on. These symptoms may include sleep problems, social isolation, depressive symptoms or panic among others. Much of this treatment is likely to be behavioral or cognitive-behavioral.
During sessions, we will also jointly examine your pattern of difficulties, and explore alternative behaviors and thoughts.
If you are experienced in therapy or have fewer symptoms to start out, we will address such issues as self-image, relationships, and personal goals.
Please note that regular weekly sessions are essential at first. Why is that?
I need to get oriented to you and your difficulties. If we do not see each other weekly at first, this is very difficult.
When you want to work on issues between sessions, you will see me soon to discuss this work, which will help you keep up with your goals. People tend to lose track of their plans if their sessions are spaced too far apart at first.
Weekly sessions provide the fastest relief of symptoms, which is important early in therapy.
